Kate’s cremated remains were not initially taken after her death and were available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. Her family received her ashes in 2018. She was born in Michigan in 1859. Her father, Albertus S. Bliss, was born in New York in 1838. He fought for the Union during the American Civil War. Her mother, Mary Ann Moon, was born in Indiana in 1836.They married in 1858. Kate was their first child. Among Kate’s siblings (all born in Michigan) were William Albertus (born in 1863), Nettie (born about 1861) and Jesse Vernon (in 1874).

In the June 1860 census Kate was 8 months old. She was listed with her parents in Berrien County, Michigan as “Caletha Bliss.” After that she was always referred to as Kate. During the census of 1870 she lived with her parents and siblings in Buchanan, Berrien County, Michigan. Her father worked in a broom manufacturing business. Before 1880 the family moved to Colfax County, Nebraska where Kate’s father was a carpenter.

On 8/28/1879 Kate married Charles Martin Steadman in Schuyler, Nebraska. He was born in 1860 in Illinois. During the census of 1880 Kate and Charles were living in Richland, Colfax County, Nebraska where Charles was a railroad agent. In the 1880s they had 2 children, both born in Nebraska. They were George Martin Steadman (born on 6/22/1881) and Hazel “Maude” Steadman (born on 9/10/1885). George was a talented baseball and basketball player. Maude was a talented singer.

In 1887 Kate’s parents moved to Lewis County, Washington. It may have been at that time that Kate and Charles moved west. In the census of 1900 Kate, Charles and their children were living at 411 Taylor in Portland, Oregon. Charles was a laborer for the railroad and the children were attending school. Kate served as the secretary for the Masonic Lodge in Portland in 1904 - 1907. Charles took that role from 1907 - 1918. The entire family was very active in Masonic functions.

At the time of the 1910 census Kate and Charles were living in Portland. Charles was the Grand Recorder for AOUW (Ancient Order of United Workmen). George was a bank clerk and Maude was a copy holder for a newspaper. Kate was a homemaker.

In 7/7/1915 in the Steadman home, daughter Maude married Cyrus Applegate Woodworth who was born in Oregon in 1885. Both sides of his family (Woodworth and Applegate) were early pioneers in Oregon. Cyrus was the great grandson of state representative Lindsay Applegate, one of the 3 Applegate brothers (Jesse, Charles & Lindsay) who blazed the Applegate Trail. Maude and Cyrus’ children (all born in Oregon) included: Cyrus Steadman (in 1916), Cecilia Kate (in 1919), and twins Virginia Ann & Daniel Bliss (in 1921).

In 1916 son George married Anna Hoban (born in Minnesota in 1885). It appears they had no children. Kate’s father died in Lewis County, Washington in 1917. Charles sued Kate for divorce in April 1918. He transferred the Portland real estate to her in 1918 and appears to have left Portland after that. They had been married for 39 years. He died in Oakland, California on 4/23/1927. Kate was listed as his wife in the death notice. Her mother died in Chehalis, Washington in 1921. Kate also lived in Chehalis in 1921, but soon moved back to Portland. Brother William died in 1922 and is buried in Nebraska.

In the 1920 census son George was living with his wife Anna in Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington where he was a bank clerk. In 1930 George and his wife were living in Chehalis and both working for a bank. During the 1930 census Kate lived with her daughter, her son-in-law and their children in Hillsdale, Oregon. Cyrus was a stationary engineer and Maude was a proof reader. Kate was 70 years old and not working outside the home.

By 4/29/1931 Kate had been admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After being a patient there for six years Kate died of “senile exhaustion” at the institution on 3/24/1937. She was 77 years old.

Maude’s husband Cyrus died on 7/16/1936 in Portland. In the census of 1940 daughter Maude was widowed and living with her 4 children in Portland. Her 77 year old father-in-law was also living with them. Maude supported the family as a proof reader and her oldest son operated a movie projector at a theater.

Kate’s son George died in Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington on 11/13/1956. Her brother Jesse died in 1960 and is buried in Lewis County, Washington. Maude died on 12/3/1966 in Forest Grove, Oregon. Grandson Daniel Woodworth died in California in 1971. Grandson Cyrus Woodworth died in Oregon in 1998. Granddaughter Virginia Woodworth Wright died in Alaska in 2002. Granddaughter Cecilia Lowry died in 2012.
