LAYTON -
After months of declining health, Myrtle Geneva Pierce Hurst passed away at age 91 on Thursday, March 27, 2003, in Ogden, Utah, surrounded by her children and many of her grandchildren.
Myrtle's children remember growing up in a musical home and treasure their mother's teachings and example, her determination, and her never ending love for each one of them.
She was born April 24, 1911 in Ogden, the eldest child of Annie Louvenia Middleton and Benjamin Franklin Pierce.
She married Vard Linden Hurst on April 10, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were together 61 years before Vard died. She was also preceded in death by her parents and younger siblings, Anna Mae Drummond, Urban M. Pierce and Julian M. Pierce, and her son-in-law, Harold A.B. Gardiner. Her children are V. Linden and Darlene Hurst of Syracuse; Julaine and John Moore of Pueblo, CO; Janet Gardiner of Layton; Roger F. and Anita Hurst, of Centerville; Ralph E. and Barbara Hurst, of Brigham City; and Patricia and Steven Carver of Layton. She leaves 29 grandchildren, 52 great-grand-children and numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Myrtle attended Ogden City Schools and Weber College, and received a B.S. degree in English with a Music minor from Utah State Agricultural College.
An accomplished pianist and organist, she served many decades as Ward, Stake, and Temple organist in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a devoted member, Myrtle served in many callings including Gospel Doctrine Teacher and Counselor in the Relief Society presidency. She was a member of the Forest Park Ward in Layton for the past 18 years.
Myrtle also used her musical talents in her vocation as an elementary school teacher in Ogden.
After retirement, she continued to substitute in the Ogden City Schools for many years.
She enjoyed her membership in the Ogden Business and Professional Women and was proud of her heritage as a Daughter of Utah Pioneers. Myrtle loved children, homemaking, flowers, music and taking photos of her family.
During the last six months of her life, Myrtle resided at Crestwood Care Center where she grew to love her caregivers. The family wishes to thank those at Crestwood who gave her such loving and professional care. The family also wishes to thank the dear neighbors who helped Vard and Myrtle so much in their declining years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Forest Park Ward Chapel, 2250 East 2300 North in Layton. Friends may call at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday at the Ward Chapel 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
