Joseph Blew was the son of Robert S. and Christianna (Hahn) Blew. He was a graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in architecture.

After being employed by several Philadelphia architects before WWI, he represented the firm of Ballinger and Perot in Lyon France. In the 1930's he served as an architect in development work for the federal government and was associated with the Civil Works Administrating and its local works division.

Before establishing his own firm with his son, Joseph M. Blew Jr., he was a parnter in MacKenzie and Blew. His work included schools in Abington, Bridgeport, Colwyn, Darby, Falcroft, Hatboror, Hellertown, Harsham, Lower Morland, Marple, Morrisville, Palmer, and Walnutport.

Mr. Blew was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Oriental Lodge 385, F & AM.

He was married first to Selena (McMahon Blew) and from this marriage was born son Joseph Blew Jr, and daughter Mrs. Larson Earle. After her death, he married Albertice Roland and became a step-father to her son, Harry Carter Roland.
