Representative from Alabama; born on a plantation and raised as a slave, he was self-educated; State house of representatives in 1870, State senate in 1872;He also was in favor of general amnesty for former confederates,
unsuccessful candidate for election in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress. By 1912 he returned to Alabama and settled in Selma, but soon began years as a wanderer, drifting to Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Wild animals apparently killed him in 1916, but no official records confirm his death.
