Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and a practicing member of the Alabama bar at the start of the Civil War, he was elected Captain in the Cahaba Rifles, eventually rising to the rank of Colonel in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Having gallantly led his men at the Battle of Seven Pines in 1862, he was mortally wounded while leading a charge at Gaines Mill one month later. He died in a Richmond hospital.
