Pioneer if miles Area Succumbs Wednesday
MILES CITY, MT. Dec. 17. -- Special ---Hartford D. Arkwright, 75, pioneer of this locality, died afternoon Wednesday following a lingering illness.
He is survived by his widow and three children, including Mrs. C.R. Cuss of Indianapolis, IN., Stanley H. Arkwright of Great Falls, MT. and Harwood W. Arkwright of this city.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., June 10, 1861.
He went with his parents as a child to Chippewa County, WI.
He became a railway mail clerk, operating out of Bismarck, N.D., in the early eighties when Forsyth was the Terminal of the Northern Pacific Railway.
After five years he accepted another government of the Indian Schools on the Crow Reservation near Billings, MT., later being transferred to the Indian Schools at Tomah, WI.
He married while at the Crow Agency and Mrs. Arkwright was his associate in teaching.
Returning to Montana from Tomah, WI., Mr. Arkwright first settled in the Musselshell Valley, then came to Miles City, where he engaged in the sheep raising business in the valley, continuing in that business until within the last few years when illness forced his retirement.
Funeral services are to be held Friday.
Burial will be in the Miles City Cemetery.
