2nd Lt. U.S. Army, Vietnam War-Lt. Merrell was killed in action by small arms fire on 10-25-1968 while serving as an Armored Reconn Unit Commander of the 1st Battalion of the 61st Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division. 2nd Lt. Merrell started his tour of Vietnam on July 25, 1968.

He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Hosmer Merrell of Marion, Illinois, and the husband of Mrs. Phoebe Merrell of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a 1962 graduate of Marion H.S., and a 1966 graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois. He was also employed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. in the Sales Division before his enlistment in January of 1967 where he went to OCS at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and graduated in December of 1967.

Awards: Purple Heart Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with One Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal.
