Before Sherman arrived in the Macon area, everyone was getting on the river and leaving south. Mrs. Rogers was not going to leave. When others warned her to leave she said, "Where is a widow with five children going to go?" Sherman camped on Low's Hill behind the Rogers' home not far from the Ocemulge River. There was a road that went up the hill from the highway. She later said that the soldiers were nicer to her than some of her own neighbors. She helped mend their clothes. The house was located in Macon where the Town and County Shopping Center is now located.

All of the girls graduated from Wesleyan College. The need for an education was instilled in the Rogers girls. The girls walked to the college campus downtown.
