May 8, 1913 Westphalia News:
"Joseph Hoefler died at 2 pm this afternoon His funeral will be held Saturday at St. Teresa Church. He was born at New Vienna Iowa, 51y2m 3d ago the son of a soldier of the Mexican War. He came here in the early spring of 1902 and owned what is known to old settlers as the Merril farm adjoining town on the SW, which he has built up into one of the best farms in eastern Kansas.
His family consists of his widow, four sons and a daughter He was buried in St Teresa cememtery.
He died from blood poisoning resulting from a slight bite on the hand by a pup he was playing with on March 3. For a while it seemed he was getting better but suffered a relapse a couple weeks ago and never recovered.
Coming for the funeral of their brother was Henry Hoefler and wife Olpe; George Hoefler of New Vienna, Iowa; Mrs Henry Helmann of New Vienna; Mrs Clem Brocker and Mrs Henry Hulsing both of Seneca.
