A kick by a mule proved fatal to L.G. Phillips, aged citizen of the Martins Mill community on Thursday afternoon. Able to be up for the first time after suffering ten days with pneumonia, Mr. Phillips walked out to his barn when the animal suddenly kicked him. The Bethel bus loaded with school children happened to be passing the Phillips house at the time and witnessed the accident. Dr. F.B. Bryant of Martins Mill was hurriedly called but the aged man died within fifteen minutes.

Deceased was born in Alabama May 8th, 1845. He came to Texas later in life and settled in the Martins Mill community where he had resided for the past forty years. His home is about three miles this side of Martins Mill.

Mr. Phillips was twice married and is survived by his second wife and nine children; four sons and five daughters. He was one of the oldest citizens of Van Zandt county and was widely known. He passed his ninetieth birthday last May.

Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon with burial at Holly Springs cemetery. Rev. D.R. Cartlidge of Athens conducted the services.
