Alpha Walton Mathews, 88, former resident of 1707 Woodlawn Rd and Rock House Rd. - Mt. Moriah Community, widow of Bailey Mathews, died November 6, 2007 at National Healthcare of Greenwood. Born in Edgefield County, December 20, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Cleveland F. and Elizabeth Lowery Walton. She was retired from Greenwood Mills-Mathews Plant after 33 years of service. Mrs. Mathews was a member of First Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and the Greenwood Mills Quarter Century Club. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Mathews Christian of Greenwood; six grandchildren, Donna "Susie" Culbertson and husband, Carroll P. and Preston and Heather, with whom she made her home, William Donald Christian, Jr. and wife, Hilda Campbell, Richard Bailey Christian and wife, Chandra, all of Greenwood, Jamie Barnes and husband, Brian of Summerville, Kemberley Mathews Hurst and husband, Bob of McDonough GA, Marcus Charles Mathews and wife, Debbie of Fayetteville GA; two nieces, Phyllis Patrick of Greenwood and Janice Benner of Sumter; nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Bailey Mathews, a sister, Earline Walton Scott and a grandson, Kenny Christian. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Blyth Funeral Home.
