The First Bishop of the Diocese of Radom, Monsignor Edward Henryk Materski was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, on January 6, 1923, to Ignatius and Mary Filutowskich, a Polish intelligentsia family.

After his father died in 1932, Edward moved to Warsaw along with his mother and two sisters, where he attended High School and graduated in 1940. He took part in the Warsaw Uprising during the Second World War.

Ordained to the priesthood on May 20, 1947, by Bishop Czeslaw Kaczmarek, during his stay in Warsaw, Materski served as secretary to the named prelate. When Kaczmarek was imprisoned by the Communists, he visited the bishop in jail many times, making it possible to keep the bishop in contact with his lawyers and took care in spreading secret correspondence. In December 1956, he initiated courses for catechists and began serving as catechetics professor at the seminary. His first task was to organize religious instruction in all schools in the Diocese, organizing after-school catechesis after cathecism teaching was removed from all schools. From 1966 till 1988, he taught catechetics and conducted formal catechetical exercises at the Catholic University of Lublin.

Pope Paul VI appointed Materski Auxiliary for the Diocese of Kielce on October 29, 1968, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Aquae Sirenses on the following December 22, from Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, assisted by Bishops Jan Jaroszewicz and Waclaw Skomorucha in the Cathedral of Kielce.

Following the death of Monsignor Jan Kanty Lorek CM., Materski was named his successor as Bishop of the Diocese of Sandomierz on March 6, 1981.

When the Diocese of Radom was erected on March 25, 1992, Pope John Paul II named Monsignor Materski as its First Bishop. During his episcopate, Materski erected 116 Parishes and initiated the construction of the seminary in Radom. On its completion it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Radom.

In 1991, he created the Diocesan Radio AVE and also founded the diocesan printing press.
