The Sourthern Standard, McMinnville, Tennessee, Friday, November 15, 1940: Poper Roberts Died Wednesday Morning From Heart Attack. Employee of Coca Cola Company At Work Tuesday and Retired That Night Feeling Unusually Well Was Stricken at 3 a.m. Poper Magness Roberts, 43, died at his home on Sparta Street at 3 o'clock Wednesday morning, following a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted from the residence at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon by the Rev. H. E. Baker, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial was in Mt. View Cemetery. Mr. Roberts had been about his usual duties on Tuesday, feeling unusually well when he retired Tuesday night. Mrs. Roberts was awakened about 3 o'clock and found him in an unconscious condition. Two physicians were summoned immediately but he was dead when they reached the Roberts home. Mr. Roberts was a son of J. A. and Minnie Jones Roberts. For several years he had been a valuable employee of the Coca Cola Bottling Company here. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ruth Moffitt Roberts, five children, William, Margie Sue, Sara Jane, Jimmie, and Martha Roberts, his parents, all of McMinnville, six brothers, Clyde (Dixie) Roberts, Chattanooga, Erb Roberts, Nashville, Hosey Roberts, Sparta, Reece Roberts, Frank Roberts, and Wayman Roberts, McMinnville, and two sisters, Mrs. Floyd McCollum of Increase, this county, and Mrs. H. B. Lyle, Guntersville, Ala. Pallbearers were: active, John Parker, Heck Lamb, Johnnie Jones, Calvin Mitchell, John B. Magness, and Howard Zachman. Honorary: J. H. Stallings, Dr. R. L. Maloney, Dr. Charles M. Clark, Jr., John W. Nelms, Estill R. Fults, Ben King, Harry King, Ed Carter, Allen McCormick, Paul B. Robinson, and James Curry. High Funeral Co. in charge of arrangements. Poper died as the result of a heart attack; he had also recently had his tonsils removed.
