Pvt Harrington enlisted into the Army at Columbus OH on November 4, 1872. His civilian occupation was laborer. Harrington was described as having brown hair, brown eyes, fair complexion & 5'8".

On December 9, 1872, Harrington reported for duty at Yorkville, SC & was assigned to L Company 7th US Cavalry. Company L was commanded by LTC George A Custer's brother-in-law, 1st LT James Calhoun. Between June 17, 1873 & January 4, 1874, Harrington was at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory in the post hospital for a gunshot wound to the left arm & a fractured right elbow.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn L Company was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Sometiime during the fighting Harrington was killed.

Two days after the battle most of Company L was found in the area of what later became known as Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill. But Harrington's body was not found with his company. Burial details found his remains on Last Stand Hill near the bodies of Boston Custer & Autie Reed (LTC Custer's brother & nephew).

It is likely Harrington was buried where he had been found. It 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
