OBITUARY:
The following appeared Friday, July 28, 1916, on the front page of The Munising News, Munising, Michigan: "A PIONEER GONE TO HIS LONG HOME - JOHN O. LEHNEN DEAD AFTER LONG ILLNESS - LEAVES TWELVE CHILDREN - Built the First Dwelling House Now Standing in Munising -- After an illness lasting a year or more John O. Lehnen died early on the morning of July 24th at his home in this township. Death was due to a complication of diseases.
"John O. Lehnen was born in Marquette, September 7, 1864. At the early age of sixteen years he was assistant to Keeper Cameron at the north light on Grand Island. He served faithfully for several years in that capacity and nearly all of his life, subsequently, was spent around or near Munising Bay.
"October 7, 1889, Mr. Lehnen married Miss Flora Powell of Powell's Point, who survives him.
"Mr. Lehnen built the first dwelling house in the city of Munising. That house, now owned by John McMillan, is located on Onota street next to the handsome residence now occupied by that gentleman. After selling the house on Onota street, Mr. Lehnen moved to east Munising where for seventeen years he engaged in the dairy business.
"The late John Lehnen was the father of thirteen children, one of whom, Jessie, died a year and a half ago. His widow and the following twelve children survive him: Annie, John, Flora, Sarah, George, Bertha, Fred, Ruth, Frank, Teddie, Myrtle and Jean. He is also survived by his mother, two sisters and one brother--all of Marquette.
"The funeral was held on the afternoon of the 25th inst. from the family residence, Rev. C. L. Austin, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment was made in Maple Grove cemetery.
"Those in attendance at the funeral, from outside the county were the following: Mrs. Sarah Lehnen, the Misses Mattie and Kittie Lehnen, George Lehnen and Mrs. Mary Lehnen, Fred Orr and Miss Jennie Anderson--all of Marquette, and Miss Anna Gogam, of Duluth, Minn." (Info added by Sally Williams)
