Virginia M. Folkes, 96, passed away March 21, 2012 in Fort Smith.
She was born July 30, 1915 in Chicago, IL.

After receiving her B.A. in Nursing from the University of Chicago, she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corp, where she achieved the rank of 1st LT as a Pediatric Nurse. After completing four plus years in the Army she worked for the Territory of Alaska as a nurse, and then returned to Fort Smith where she remained the rest of her life.
She was the Director of Sparks School of Nursing for a number of years, and she then became a school nurse for the Fort Smith Public Schools. After her retirement from the public schools, Virginia continued her desire to learn and travel reaching the far corners of the earth. At age 95, she took her last of 17 cruises. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, former students and colleagues.

Graveside service will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, March 23, 2012 at Fort Smith National Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

She is survived by her nephews, Robert, Thomas and Steve Folkes, and her nieces, Tammy Brock, Jean Moan, and Cheryl Berry.
