United with Masonic Lodge at the age of 21 years, and remained a Mason until his death. He was converted to the Christian religion and united with the Baptist church in 1880 and was ordained to preach the gospel by said church in 1883. He was a great Bible scholar and an Oddfellow.
The following poetry was written by William shortly before he died and found in his personal effects.
It was the 10th of December
A very beautiful day.
Old Age had crept upon Me
I was 88 that day.
I feel that God has kept Me
A mission to fulfill
I feel that blessed impression
Is resting on me still.
I pray that God will strengthen Me
His word once more to speak
And say to all lost sinners,
"It's Jesus you should seek."
