John was the only child of George Amberson and Elizabeth. John grew up in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

About 1817-1818 George left with his brother William to go west. There are several attempts to locate George by Elzabeth without success.(George went on to Kentucky, Texas and finally Louisiana)

John married Ann Davis, daughter of David and Jane Davis. John and Ann had 2 children William and unknown daughter that is believed to have died before 1845.

Ann died sometime before 1845; As John married Rachel Quest
January 5, 1845 Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennyslvania.
John and Rachel had 2 known children Melissa and Amanda.

John went to California between 1849-1850 as Rachel and the girls are alone on the 1850 census.

John is next found living in Tuolumne County, California, working in the mines, were he died.

was able to confirm that John Amberson was "killed at Shaw's Flat by a cave." This information is in the "History of Tuolumne County California, page 266. Date was 14 July 1852.

Another article in "The Saga of Old Tuolumne" mentions his name as one of many citizens "from all parts of the United States, when they took their departure from this earth many of their bodies were borne to the hillside cemetery, from which spreads out in every direction a panorama of scenic wonderment.."
