He was born Dec. 23, 1934, on the home place in Albion, Idaho, to Curtis G. and Zalona Pearl Smith Mahoney. He attended school in Albion until the college closed and then went to Declo to finish high school, where he lettered in football and baseball and graduated in 1953.
VaDell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January of 1954 and served two years during the Korean Conflict. He then returned home to Albion and enrolled at Idaho State University in the T.I. program as a machinist. After completing the program, Curt did his apprenticeship at Rupert Iron Works under Richard Bohle. Everyone there called him "Red" and he was "Red" from then on.
While working at Rupert Iron Works, he met Marcella Parr. They were married on Feb. 14, 1965, in Elko, Nev. He later worked at Wes's Welding and Shockey Sheet Metal.
Curt served on the Albion City Council in the early '70s, was a member of the Declo Lions Club, and was a charter member of the Albion American Legion. He loved to fish and hunt, and then fish some more.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella Mahoney of Albion; his sons, Rick (Kayleen) Mahoney of Albion and Chuck (Monica) Mahoney of Pocatello; grandchildren, Tamara of Williston, N.D., Kendra Lea of Pocatello and Rich of Albion; and one sister, Thelma Lou (Don) Toupin of Ogden, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bob.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Albion. Military rites will be provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization and the Albion American Legion.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Rasmussen Funeral Home of Burley.
