Obituary
Unidentified Newsclipping - 1890
VAN WART.--Alexander Van Wart died at his home in Pleasantville, Westchester Co., New York, Tuesday, February 25, aged 91. He was a son of Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of Major Andre, the British spy. His birthplace was in Mt. Pleasant, on a farm purchased by his father in Putnam County awarded him by the Government. He was converted in early manhood at the home of a neighbor, and thereafter joined the Methodist Episcopal church at White Plains, where his membership continued more than fifty years. He was early licensed to preach, and for sixty-two years held that relation either at White Plains or Pleasantville. He did much personal work in planting Methodism in lower Westchester. He was among the first to preach at Yonkers and Dobbs Ferry and other points, preaching in school-houses and dwellings. Brother Van Wart loved Methodism. He used his means freely in local and general church work. He was liberal almost to a fault. He was a happy-spirited old man. Paralysis rendered him unable to recognize or converse with friends. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church at Pleasantville on Friday, Febraury 28, and were conducted by his pastor, assisted by the Rev. A. Davis. The interment was at White Plains.
