Elvin J. "Shorty" Bailey, of New Freedom, died August 13, 2012, at Country Meadows of Leader Heights. He was the husband of the late Naomi M. (Klinefelter) Bailey.

Born December 20, 1920 in Codorus Township, he was the son of the late John P. and Lula M. (Lloyd) Bailey.

Shorty was employed for 25 years as a mechanic with the former Strausbaugh Pontiac, Glen Rock, retiring after 25 years of service. He previously worked for the former Werner and Wertz in New Freedom for 20 years.

Mr. Bailey served in the U.S. Navy during WWII sailing on the USS Cortland. He was a Charter member of the New Freedom VFW Post 7012; a member of Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403, Glen Rock; The Viking Athletic Association, York; and Messiah Lutheran Church, Railroad.

Shorty had great interest and talent in detailing automobiles. He enjoyed reunions with his Navy buddies, riding his motorcycle, snowmobiling and water skiing.

He is survived by a son, Michael J. Bailey and wife Terri of Potosi; a daughter, Dawn E. Raffensberger and husband Harry of New Freedom; three grandsons, Mark Raffensberger and wife Wanda, Jason Raffensberger and Shane Bailey; two great-granddaughters, Shelby and Kendall Raffensberger; a sister, Elva Smith and husband Kenny of Chickentown, MD.

He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., August 20, 2012, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., New Freedom. Chaplain Dennis Hamsher will officiate. Interment with Full Military Honors by York County Veterans Honor Guard will be in New Freedom Cemetery.
