They settled in Washington, D.C., where Catherine attended school and graduated from Central High School. Her father was a marine engineer and was employed by Fussell’s Ice Cream Co., operating and maintaining the factory equipment. A third sister, Margaret Brember Gourlay, was born March 7, 1924.
On December 5, 1931, Catherine married Meade Close Fairall; they had four children: Meade Close Fairall, Jr., born September 26, 1932; Stewart William Fairall, born August 15, 1938; James Richard Fairall, born September 15, 1940; and Margaret Cathleen Fairall, born October 30, 1944. Catherine and Meade were married 51 years.
In the late 1930’s, Catherine and Meade purchased undeveloped property in Kensington, MD, with the intention of eventually building a family home. Over a period of several years, the couple worked together to clear the property, including felling trees. They oversaw the construction of their house and in 1940, when it was finished, they moved into it. They lived in the house until their deaths.
In the late 1950’s, Catherine was employed at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. She was assigned to the Institute’s Division of Space Management, which she thoroughly enjoyed because she was able to use her keen mathematical and problem-solving skills. She held this job through the mid-1960’s.
Catherine was a crackerjack crossword puzzle solver, a master of hand-made knitted and crocheted goods, a voracious reader, a creative cook, and lover of children. She is remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother who made their house a home, and a beloved grandmother.
Catherine Gourlay Fairall, died at her home in Kensington, MD, on March 16, 1985 at the age of 72. At the time her surviving family members were her immediate family plus 7 grandchildren: Holly Meade Fairall; Jennifer Cathleen Peters; Brian James Peters; Heidi Cathleen Fairall; John David Fairall; Wendy Diane Fairall; and Kimberly Ann Fairall, and two sisters: Agnes Grieve Gourlay and Margaret Gourlay Volz. Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Meade Close Fairall, Sr., on July 9, 1983.
