AMERICAN MATHEMATICIAN, ART COLLECTOR

Edward was the son of astronomer John Monroe Van Vleck (for whom the Van Vleck lunar crater is named) and father of Nobel Laureate John Hasbrouck Van Vleck. Edward graduated from Wesleyan University, attended Johns Hopkins, and received his Ph.D from the University of Göttingen, Germany. He was a professor at Wesleyan and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where the mathematics building is named in his honor. He was a former president of the American Mathematical Society and author of Theory of Divergent Series and Algebraic Continued Fractions. Many of his writings are on function theory and differential equations. He was also known for his collection of Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) which was one of the largest. His collection is now in the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin.
