Sheriff J. Shelby Best Dies After Operation
Boyle County Sheriff John Shelby Best, 63, of Perryville road, who served for approximately 25 years in various capacities as a local law enforcement officer, died at 5:15 o'clock Sunday night in Kentucky Baptist hospital at Louisville, where he had undergone major surgery on Wednesday. Born June 24, 1892, in Washington County, Mr. Best came to Danville about 40 years ago and had lived here ever since. Early in life, he was engaged in the mercantile business in this city and was interested in farming until his death. He took office as High Sheriff of Boyle County on Jan. 1, 1954, after having served the four previous years as deputy sheriff of this county. Before that he was jailer here for eight years. At one period, he was engaged as land and rights-of-way agent for the Tennessee Gas Transmission Company. Mr. Best also served as a State Probation officer under Judge Kindrick S. Alcorn. He was for many years a director of Central Kentucky Building & Loan Association, was an active member at the time of his death of Gethsemane Baptist Church, West Danville, and a member of the Knight of Pythias. He was active in Democratic circles. Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Ruth Lee Brinkley Best, to whom Mr. Best was married on Aug. 22, 1952; four children by his first wife, including two daughters, Mrs. John Semago, New Port Ritchey, Fla., and Miss Helen Miami, Fla., and two (continued in Page Four)

C; one brother, Vernon Best, Rose Hill; two sisters, Mrs. James Bottoms, Perryville, and Mrs. George Russell, Springfield, and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Burton Callico officiating, assisted by Dr. Arthur Fox, interim pastor of the church.. Burial will be in Bellevue cemetery. The body was brought from to Stith funeral home last night and remains there. By virtue of his office, Boyle County Coroner Tom M. Edwards automatically assumes certain duties of the High Sheriff. Boyle County Judge Samuel R. Cheek Jr. will later appoint a High Sheriff to serve until the next General Election.
