Baby Adolfo's death appeared to be at the hands of Loca Mariana, the local preacher who claimed to be a direct agent of the Lord and that she could converse at will with the departed Padre Mahin.

Mariana preached from 1880 that the world would end on May 16, 1883, holding meetings at Las Tres Piedras, with her largest and nearly final meeting during the Spring and Summer of 1883.

Baby Adolfo's parents were caught up in all the hoopla but when Adolfo, Sr had to attend to business in Fresno he left his wife and baby with Mariana for safekeeping. While he was gone Mariana declared one of the three of that family should die for not believing in her. When Adolfo Sr returned Mariana told him they would never get to Las Tres Piedras with their baby, and that they would return to her and beg for help. On the way to Las Tres Piedras the baby went into convulsions and died as they returned for Mariana's help. Mariana went to the hillside, pretended to speak with the departed Padre Mahin, and returned saying Padre Mahin ordered that the child be buried immediately.

After being arrested and tried in Fresno Mariana was acquitted. There was no mineral poison found in baby Adolfo's stomach and everyone fearing the wrath of Mariana refused to testify against her. One woman, Juana Arroyo told baby Adolfo's uncle, Cayetano Chevoya that she had witnessed Mariana heat milk with poison herb in it on the stove, but being terrified of Mariana, Juana said nothing until it was too late.
