Josephine was 12 yrs old when her father died suddenly. As the eldest child, many of the household duties fell to her as did the duties involved in running a family stationery, tobacco and candy store business. She was also called upon to help tend her younger siblings. It is not surprising that she was anxious to be 'liberated' from her family responsibilities.

Josephine was not yet 15 when she and Henry Born eloped and were married by a justice of the peace on 7JUN1881 in Chicago IL. They were later married in the Catholic Church. Records show that they were (re) married on 14 JUN 1882 in New Buffalo Michigan.

Henry was a Weight Master with Weights & Measures. Josephine was a housewife and undoubtedly a very busy mother. Eventually, Josephine and Henry had 10 children. Perhaps not the liberation from the long list of chores that she had originally sought, but she was certainly the mistress of her own household.

Their children were:
1-Mary Jane 'Jennie M.' Born BAAR b. APR 1883, Chicago;
2-Lillian Leone 'Lillie' Born HAMMER, b. 23NOV1885, Chicago;
3-Lauretta A. "Laura/Lauri" Born O'NEILL, b. 24 FEB 1888 Chicago;
4-Arthur Born, b. DEC 1890, Chicago;
5-Charles Born, b. AUG 1892, Chicago;
6-Josephine Born KNOWLES b. DEC 1893, Chicago;
7-Elmer Born, b. DEC 1895, Chicago;
8-Marie Born, b. DEC 1897, Chicago;
9-Henry A. Born, b Chicago
10-Florence Born COONEY, b. 1900, Chicago.

Josephine died 22JAN1919 of hemorrhrage. She had established at least 16 different households for her family in 36 years of marriage, all in Chicago.
