Russell Gene Bilyeu, 82, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2012, at his home.

Russell was born January 22, 1930, to John Gordon and Mary Christine (Renfro) Bilyeu in Krum, Texas. Russell grew up in Krum and graduated from Krum High School in 1947 with a love for mathematics and basketball. Russell was united in marriage to Johnnie Catherine Wells in 1953. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from North Texas State College, and in 1961 he received his Doctorate from the University of Kansas. He returned to Denton with his growing family and joined the faculty at UNT, teaching in the Math Department until 2000. He remained a loyal fan of the Krum basketball team. After retirement, Russell moved to the country with his son where he found great pleasure attending high school basketball games, learning guitar, and becoming a Texas Master Naturalist, protecting native grasslands and developing his skills as an avid bird watcher.

He was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his sister, Theopal Reed & husband James, his son & daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Brian Bilyeu, his daughter Brenda Hoggatt & husband Mark of Austin, his daughter Gay Lynn Michaud & husband Michael of Abilene, his daughter Amy Ellzey & husband Todd of Round Rock, 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The family will be holding a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of Rural Texas in Bowie or Wise Area Relief Mission (WARM).
