Hiram "Hi" Winslow was born on 11 July 1837 in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York, a son of Hosmer Hyde and Cornelia Marie (Winslow) Winslow. When he was 13 years old, he traveled with his family from his home in Freedom, New York to Lena, Illinois where the family lived for 2 years. Then it was on to Fountain Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota where his family settled & his father, Hosmer H. Winslow, pre-empted 160 acres of land under the Homestead Act. Hiram received his education in the common schools, which he attended until he was sixteen years of age. He then worked with his parents until age 22.

During his 23rd year he went to Chatfield and learned the blacksmith trade in C. P. Post's shop. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company D, Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, as did his brother, Philander. After one year's service he was discharged because of ill health. After completing his apprenticeship in the blacksmith trade, he moved back to Fountain where he opened a blacksmith shop, which he conducted in connection with his farming operations.

On October 6, 1861 he married Lorinda "Lynn" Louise Post and to them have been born five children; C.P. lives in Wisconsin, F.B. and May are deceased, Morris lives on the home farm and Bertha married Herman Hoopman.

He continued his trade and farmed until 1876 when he sold out and went to Section 22, Beaver Township, where he has since made his home on 160 acres of excellant land.

Hiram is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Chester, Iowa, which village is his market place. In politics he is a Republican and has been a member of the school board in Disrict 114 for more than 10 years. He is affiliated with the Masonic Order of Chatfield.

He died on December 6, 1934 in Wisconsin while visiting his daughter Bertha and son-in-law Herman Hoopman. His remains were returned to Minnesota and buried in the Winslow Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Fountain.
