During his 23rd year he went to Chatfield and learned the blacksmith trade in C. P. Post's shop. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company D, Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, as did his brother, Philander. After one year's service he was discharged because of ill health. After completing his apprenticeship in the blacksmith trade, he moved back to Fountain where he opened a blacksmith shop, which he conducted in connection with his farming operations.
On October 6, 1861 he married Lorinda "Lynn" Louise Post and to them have been born five children; C.P. lives in Wisconsin, F.B. and May are deceased, Morris lives on the home farm and Bertha married Herman Hoopman.
He continued his trade and farmed until 1876 when he sold out and went to Section 22, Beaver Township, where he has since made his home on 160 acres of excellant land.
Hiram is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Chester, Iowa, which village is his market place. In politics he is a Republican and has been a member of the school board in Disrict 114 for more than 10 years. He is affiliated with the Masonic Order of Chatfield.
He died on December 6, 1934 in Wisconsin while visiting his daughter Bertha and son-in-law Herman Hoopman. His remains were returned to Minnesota and buried in the Winslow Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Fountain.
