James was a conductor on the B&O Railroad. His fell ill on a run enroute from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD and underwent a gallstone operation at Allegany Hospital in Cumberland on Feb 10, 1921. He died at the hospital on Feb 14, 1921. He had been with the Railroad for over 20 years.

He survived the December 23, 1903 derailment accident of the passenger train Duquesne Limited, which struck a load of timber lying on the tracks. The timber had fallen from a freight train minutes before the collision. The crash resulted in 64 deaths and 68 injuries.
