Cora Jane (Hylton) Mills’ cremated remains were not initially taken after her death and were available at the Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. In September 2019 a family member claimed her ashes. More information about unclaimed cremains at OSH is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/osh/Pages/cremains.aspx A book by David Maisel and a short documentary film by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.

Cora was born in Mercer County, West Virginia. According to her death certificate she was born in 1888, but her birth record reports on 2/28/1889. Her father, Hiram Hylton, was born in Virginia in 1848. Her mother, Louisa Dickerson, was born in 1852 in Virginia. They were married on 3/4/1870 in Floyd County, Virginia. Among their children were: Isaac L. (born about 1870), Archie Benjamin (1871), Ira Joseph C. (1874), Mary S. (about 1876), Lydia A. (1877), Martin Luther (1879), Emilla C. (1881), Hannah I. “Hattie” (1883), Daniel W.(1885), Elijah E. (1886), Cora Jane (1889), and Laura E. (1892). Those children born before 1886 were native of Virginia and the younger ones, Cora and Laura, were born in West Virginia.

During the 1880 census (before Cora was born), her parents and older siblings were living in Burks Fork, Floyd County, Virginia where her father was a farm laborer. About 1886 the Hylton family moved from Virginia to Mercer County, West Virginia. At the time of the 1900 census, Cora was 10 years old, attending school, and living with her parents and siblings in Beaver Pond, Mercer County, West Virginia where her father was farming.

At the time of the 1910 census, Cora’s parents and brother Martin were farming in Camas Prairie, Klickitat County, Washington. Cora was not with them and has not been found in that year’s census. She would have been about 21. Her brother Martin never married and died in Klickitat county on 8/25/1916. He was 36. Her mother died on 10/10/1926 and her father died on 6/11/1928. Cora’s parents and brother Martin were buried at the Mount Adams Cemetery in Glenwood, Klickitat County, Washington.

In the 1920 census Cora was a lodger in the home of her niece Lonnie (Hylton) Sargent Littlefield, the daughter of Cora’s brother Archie. Cora was married and using the name Cora Anderson, but her husband was not with her. There is no indication she had children. Cora Jane Anderson married John Arthur Mills on 4/14/1923 in Santa Ana County, California. He was born in Iowa in 1868. Cora and John have not been found in the 1930 or 1940 census. In 1937 in Oregon, she applied for a social security number under the name Cora Jane Mills. Hers was among the earliest accounts which were first established in December 1936. In April 1945 she changed the name on her account to Cora Jane Hilton (not Hylton).

In 1945 Cora and John were living in Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon. On 7/11/1945 Cora was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital (OSH), a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. Three months later on 10/24/1945 John was admitted to OSH. After being a patient at the institution for 4 years he died there of pneumonia on 12/23/1949. He was about 80 years old. Like Cora his cremains were never claimed and are still available to be requested by relatives. Cora was a patient at the institution for 15 years. She died there of pneumonia on 10/28/1960. She was 71.

While she was institutionalized several of her siblings died. Her brother Isaac died in California on 1/27/1946. Joseph died in West Virginia on 11/8/1949. Sister Mary Susan VanDyke died 2/5/1957 in West Virginia. Several siblings survived Cora. Sister Laura (Hylton) Markgraff died on 3/21/1961. Archie died in Jackson County in southern Oregon on 1/19/1962. Daniel died on 3/12/1964. Emillie (Hylton) Murray died on 9/15/1971. Hattie (Hylton) Markgraf died on 8/3/1974 in Washington.
