George W Wiltse age 85 passed away Monday evening at his home in Montezuma after being ill for a few days. Burial in the Masonic IOOF Cemetery at Montezuma, Iowa.

George W Wiltse was the son of Leonard and Jane Smith Wiltse. He was the oldest of a family of eight. He resided in Clayton County until he enlisted for active service in the Civil War in August 1862 when a youth of 17 years. He fought in the battles of Champion's Hill and Black River Bridge and was wounded in the assault on Vicksburg. He returned to Clayton County after the War. He lived there until 1877 when he moved to a farm south of Montezuma. In 1883 he entered the coal and dray business in Montezuma. In 1903 he was appointed postmaster of Montezuma.

He was married to Emily J Twombly in July 1870 in Colesburg, Iowa. They were the parents of five children, D O, Frank, Lottie, Maude and William. After the death of Emily he married Tillie F Myers in May 1889. They had one daughter, Lois.
