Mr. Nowland, 217 W. Isabelle St, a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, died yesterday afternoon at a St. Joseph Hospital. He was a retired custodian for St. Mary's Catholic Church, and was a member of the Holy Name Society of that church.
Mr. Nowland was the son of Charles Noland, for many years active in Democratic politics here. Charles Nowland was presiding judge of the Buchanan County Court when the present county jail was erected more than half a century ago. Later he served as county assessor and then became president of the board of public works.
Monsignor Charles S. Nowland, a son, is rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Kansas City. He served as assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Cathedral until 1956.
Besides his son, survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Nowland; three daughters, Mrs. Tom Butler, St. Joseph; Miss Susannah Nowland of the home, and Mrs. Glenn Akins, Pacific Grove, CA; a sister, Mrs. Maude Fuelling, St. Joseph;one brother, George Nowland, Paradise, CA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
