The Elkland Journal - 1892 - Mrs. Matilda Stull, daughter of David and Mary (Tubbs) Hammond was born in Newtown, NY, 12 Mar 1805. She died aged 87 yrs. On 12 Mar 1811, the day that Matilda was 6 years old, her parents and the families of John, afterwards Judge Byron, and Samuel Tubbs and Robert Tubbs moved from Newtown, afterward called Southport and now part of Elmira, NY; came to the Cowanesque Valley, at that date it was just little better than a wilderness. It took thirteen teams to move the little colony, and now thickly settled and prosperous communities. They purchased most of the land lying between what is now Elkland and Osceola and here these sturdy pioneers lived and wrought and here many of their descendants remain to this day, the children of their fathers. Matilda Hammond married 17 Apr 1822 Marinus W. Stull. They had eight children. Mr. Stull died 1st Mar 1862; Mrs. Stull died 22 Jan. 1892. Matilda Hammond was the eldest of eight children.
