The son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Cavanaugh) Hemminger, he married Elizabeth Tritt and fathered Warren (b. @1851), Christian (b. @1853), Francis Catherine (b. 01/09/55 - married Edwin Atkinson McLauchlan), Benjamin Calvin (b. 09/17/57), Margaret (b. 1859), Bella Sarah (b. 11/29/61 - married Gilbert W. Breese and Edmond Rufus Jones), and Mary Elizabeth (b. 08/02/64). In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Camp McClure in Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. F, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.

Elizabeth died in 1883, and he married the much younger Mary Ella Somberger , fathering Frank M. L. (b. 05/10/84), Wallace E. (b. 07/04/85), Nettie Viola (b. 12/25/86), Adam Bruce (b. 07/01/88), William Ray (b. 11/16/90), and Ira Merrill (b. 08/20/93). Cause of his death is listed as "cirrhosis of the liver (hypertrophic)" with "jaundice" a contributing factor.
