U.S. Congressman. Born in Nieder Rebbach, Austria-Hungary, he immigrated to the United States, where he became an important and influential journalist in Wisconsin. As editor of the Milwaukee Daily Vorwaertsm (1892-98), he was one of the organizers of the Social Democracy in 1897 and the Social Democratic Party, in 1898. In 1911, he was elected as a Socialist to the Sixty-second Congress, serving until 1913. After several times to be reelected for another post in Congress, he was elected as a Socialist to the Sixty-eighth, Sixty-ninth and Seventieth Congresses, serving (1923-29). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his editorial work. He died of injuries at age 69 after being struck by a streetcar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
