Allan Stewart Thorn was one of four children born to Minnie Hyde Potter and her husband, Charles Edward Stewart Thorn. His sisters were Mildred, Helen and Norma.

Allan was married to Alice Elizabeth Carpenter for 35 years. Together they raised three children in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania: Stewart, Elizabeth and Patricia. After Alice's passing, Allan married Dorothea Glasgow Rouleau in Williamsburg, Virginia. Allan was an architect and was supervising architect of White House renovations during the Truman administration.
