Actress. Born in Pennsylvania, her family moved to New York City, New York when she was a small child. She was educated at Barnard College there and made her first professional acting appearance with the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York in "The Madras House." Her Broadway theater debut came in 1921 after her graduation, in "The Mirage” and subsequently had a long career as a character actress. She appeared in forty-three motion pictures between 1931 and 1963, and was nominated for Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1944 for her role of wife of ‘Ling Tan’ in the movie “Dragon Seed”. Offstage she was active in Actor's Equity, relief charity work and organizing community theatre productions."
