Joseph Harvey Snipes, called "Jodie," was the oldest of six children born to Mary Jane Wilson and James Harvey Snipes. Joseph married twice, in 1845 and in 1858. He had two sons, James and Philip, by his first wife, Beulah Hartwell Cook. He had two more sons (Joseph and Abner) and a daughter, Lucile, by his second wife, Fannie A. Morriss. Both marriages took place in Douglassville, and all five children were born in Douglassville.
