Matt was born Matti William Koskela in Alajarvi, Finland. He and 5 of his siblings immigrated to America on the ship "Werra" with his mother, arriving in New York on October 4, 1887. His father Matti and eldest brother Gust had arrived earlier in America. The family reunited at Carbon, Wyoming, then went to the Pendleton, Oregon area where they farmed for several years. They then joined several other Finnish families and traveled by wagon train to Long Valley, Idaho, arriving there in 1896. He and his family were amongst the first European settlers in Long Valley. The family homesteaded there. Matt married Fanne (Fannie) Lyyti Niemi of Centerville, Washington on May 1, 1902. They had 2 children, Wilfred and Alice, born in Washington state. He served in World War I, and afterward, he and his family moved to Fairfield, Idaho, where he was a farmer most of his remaining life. He died at Byrne Veteran's Hospital in Boise. He "Americanized" his name by changing his surname to Costella.
