Son of Robert Armstrong and Mary Harville. He was born in Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama. His family moved to Texas when he was about five years old and lived in Springtown and Paradise, Texas. He moved to Fort Worth by the time he was in his early teens.
He tried out for the Fort Worth Cats professional baseball team and was accepted but couldn't support himself during spring training; he just wanted to see if he was good enough to make the team. He was known to be the best non-pro pitcher in Fort Worth. He ran so fast that he was affectionately known as Bugger Armstrong. He played end on his high school foot ball team, the Northside Steers.

He helped support his mother until he married Carrie Goodwin, and they had three sons. He worked for Swifts Meat Packing House in the Fort Worth Stockyards until he retired.
He had sandy hair and blue eyes. He was light completed and died from skin cancer a few years after he retired.
As an adult, he lived in North Fort Worth, Saginaw, River Oaks, and North Richland Hills; all in Tarrant County, TX. He had a smal cabin at D&D camp at Possum Kingdom Lake.
