Maria-Anna was the daughter of King Vittorio Emmanuel I of Sardinia and his wife Terese, Archduchess of Austria. She was the twin of Maria-Teresa.
On 27 February 1831, she married Emperor Ferdinand of Austria. Upon her marriage, she became the Empress and Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Bohemia, Hungary, and Lombardy-Valencia. Even though the couple were devoted to each other, there were no children.
On 2 December 1848 Ferdinand abdicated as Emperor of Austria, but retaining his imperial rank. Maria-Anna was henceforward titled Empress Maria-Anna. They lived in retirement together, spending the winters at Castle Hradschin in what is now Prague and the summers at Reichstadt.
Maria-Anna died in Castle Hradschin six years after Ferdinand.
