ERRORS IN MANY ONLINE FAMILY TREES - Many online trees have confused/combined our Walter Nichols with the William Nichols family of Alabama. This error probably arose because both had a son named George Washington Nichols, born about 1820. Many trees combined the names of these two men to be William Walter Nichols, and confused /combined many of the facts and records regarding these two SEPARATE, UNRELATED families.
========
UNMARKED GRAVE - Family lore says Walter's unmarked grave is adjacent (north) to the grave of his son, Thomas Nichols.

NAME - Some believe his first name was William. No records have been found by this researcher that show this. However, a family history written in 1955 stated his name was William Walter and at least one grandson was named William Walter.
BIRTH DATE AND PLACE - His birth and death year are estimated based on census records and family lore. According to census records, he was born in North Carolina

PARENTS OF WALTER are UNKNOWN. The published bios (3) from the Benton County Nichols family all indicate that Walter's parents had been forgotten by Benton County descendants. No paper trail has been found that gives us the names of Walter's parents. Some have attempted to connect him to the wealthy, influential family of John Nichols and Sarah Stout Nichols from Nashville, but Walter was not listed as a child in their probate records, and there has been no proof offered for this theory. Walter was an uneducated, illiterate shoe cobbler and farmer, and it seems unlikely that this uneducated man was the son of one of the richest families in Nashville.

WIFE OF WALTER NICHOLS: The published bios (3) from the Benton County Nichols family all indicate that the names of his wife had been forgotten by Benton County descendants. Many believe that Walter's wife may have been named Sarah since the first-born daughters of several of Walter's children were named Sarah. Some online tree show the last name of Woolrich/Woolridge for Walter's wife. However, there are no source documents that support this.

McMINN COUNTY TENNESSEE TO BENTON COUNTY ARKANSAS - The Walter Nichols family migrated by wagon train from Tennessee with several other families to Benton County Arkansas in 1854. They settled in Dickson Township, probably near McKissick Spring (Centerton). Several other families also came in this wagon train, including the Oakes, Shorts, Misers, Wrights, Buttrams, Blevins, Coffelts.

NINE CHILDREN: 1) Son 2) George Washington Nichols 3) Sarah 'Sally' Nichols Vinyard, 4) Thomas W. Nichols, 5) Elizabeth Nichols Stewart, 6) James Nichols (moved to Texas?), 7) Amanda Nichols Oakes, 8) Cordelia Jane Nichols Thurman, 9) William 'Babe' Nichols.

Y-DNA FOR NICHOLS - Several male descendants of Walter Nichols contributed Y-DNA to the NICHOLS SURNAME Y-DNA PROJECT. With additional research, and hopefully additional DNA matches in the future we may be able to find the parents of Walter Nichols, discover our immigrant Nichols ancestor, and establish our lineage back from Walter Nichols! POSSIBLE NPE FOUND IN ONE NICHOLS LINE: It seems, based on Y-DNA analysis that Thomas W. Nichols, who was raised as a son of Walter, was not his biological son.
