U.S. Congressman. Born the son of millionaire philanthropist Alphonzo Edward Bell Sr., he graduated from Occidental College in 1938. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps, (1942-45). After the war, he was a successful rancher and was president of his family oil business, (1947-59). He was chairman, Republican California State Central Committee, (1956-59) and a member of the Republican National Committee, (1956-59). In 1961, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death from pneumonia at age 89.
