MARION Neil Aaron Franklin, 64, of Marion, went to his heavenly home Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at his home in Sugar Hill. A native of McDowell County, Neil was born March 29, 1947, and is a son of Ernest and Louise Lawing Franklin of Marion. He had been a patient at the VA Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., for the past six weeks. Neil was a dedicated son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren were the center of his world. He was an avid golfer, softball player and fisherman. He was a wood turner and furniture maker. He graduated from Marion High School in 1965 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969, serving 13 months in Vietnam. He was a retired volunteer fireman having been instrumental in starting the Sugar Hill Montford Cove Volunteer Fire Department. He ran Franklin General Store along with his father from 1970 to 1982. He retired from Drexel Furniture Company. Neil was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church. Saddened by the loss of Mr. Franklin, in addition to his parents, are his wife of 46 years, Marie Laney Franklin of the home; two children, Tess Porter and husband, Dirk, of Marion and Jody Franklin and wife, Holly, also of Marion; three grandchildren, Tyler Porter, Taylor Franklin and Zach Franklin; two brothers, Freddie Franklin and wife, Carla, of Hampton, Va., and Perry Franklin and wife, Debbie, of Marion; six nephews; one niece; two great-nieces; a number of special first cousins; and a host of friends. A funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at 4 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Revs. Jimmy Upton and Dr. Steve Parker officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church. Interment will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Marines. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 55 Bethel Church Rd., Marion, N. C. 28752. Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
