William Ben (Blackie) Blackwell, 81 of Conyers, died Saturday, 3 Jan 2004. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ben Blackwell. He is survived by his wife, Elsie K. Blackwell of Conyers; daughter, Betty Joiner, Conyers; grandchildren, Brad DePriest of Atlanta; and Samantha Joiner of Conyers; sister, Gladys Abernathy, several nieces and nephews and friend, Johnny Whitworth of Conyers.

Bill was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of Conyers Christian Church and a former member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church, a member of the Atlanta Senior Golf Association and a WWII U.S. Navy veteran. Ben was a retired Atlanta Police Officer and a Christian man whose honesty, integrity and strong sense of justice were modeled in every facet of his life. His unique sense of humor created laughter but was also a reflection of his deep appreciation of life. And though he lived his life quietly, enjoyed his family and friends, he leaves an indelible mark on those who loved and knew him. "That best portion of a good man's life: His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love." William Wordsworth (1770-1850).
