Helen Rose Kenyon was born on March 3, 1924 near Altamont, SD on the family farm to Fred and Rose (Wegman) Walter. She grew up on the farm and helped milk cows and did other farm work. Helen attended country grade school and then graduated from Gary High School.
On April 7, 1942 she was united in marriage to Harold Kenyon. They lived and farmed near Gary, SD. During these years, Helen also worked for the Turkey plant in Watertown, SD, delivered the Watertown Public Opinion for many years, was a janitor for Deuel County National Bank and owned and operated the Kenyon's Variety Store in Gary. In 1970, they moved into Gary where she was currently resided. On February 21, 2009 Harold passed away. Helen remained in their home until she passed away on Thursday, March 08, 2012 at the age of 88 years and 5 days.
Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gary where she served as the Sunday school Superintendent and teacher for many years as well as in the Ladies Aid. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Senior Citizens, Rebekah Logde for over 60 years, Watertown Odd Fellows #24, the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion of Rollage, MN and a past member of the Gary Historical Society. Helen helped establish and managed the annual Gary Buffalo Feed for many years. She loved to spend time with her grandkids and enjoyed watching her great grandkids. She enjoyed her garden and flowers. She liked to sew and embroider. She and Harold loved to travel and visit people; they were always on the go.
She is survived by her four children: Joyce (Bob) Keimig, Gary, SD, Terry (Anita) Kenyon, Gary, SD, Bruce (Dawn) Kenyon, Hayti, SD and Dan (Theresa) Kenyon, Sioux Falls, SD; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; two sisters: Evelyn Meyer and Barbara Ries; one brother, Ted (Delores) Walter; sister-in-law, Peggy Sellin; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sons: Melvin and Mark Kenyon; daughter-in-law Bev Kenyon; step-grandson Scott Peterson; two brothers and four sisters.
