Hiram was born in Catlin Township, Vermillion County, Illinois. In 1876 he went to Kansas with his father, mother and sisters. After the death of his mother, his father moved the family to Sedelia where Hiram attended the Sedelia public schools. In 1896 he began working as a delivery boy in a retail grocery business, advancing to Chief Clerk. When he retired in 1944, he had completed 50 years in the grocery business.
