Pate, who unexpectedly passed away during the college's recent spring break, began his career at WCJC in 1978 as a dorm director and instructor of English and physical education. Over the next several years he coached men's and women's basketball, tennis, and baseball, all while continuing as a multi-discipline instructor. From 1985 to 2000, he retired from coaching and continued as a full-time instructor of physical education.

In 1998, Pate was named division chair for math, science and physical education. In 2000, he was appointed interim vice president of academic affairs until he assumed the role of vice president of academic affairs. In September 2001, following a reorganization at WCJC, Pate's title changed to vice president of instruction. In 2004, he was named senior vice president of instruction, the position he held until his death.
