Goldie Geneva Alwin Hart, age 89, of Corbin, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 in the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin.

She was the wife of the late Lonnie E. Hart; and a daughter of the late Mike and Lissie Davis Alwin; and the granddaughter of late William (Bill) and Millie Ann Sowders Davis.

Goldie's father, Mike Alwin came to America from Lebanon as a young boy, arriving at Ellis Island by boat. Migrating to Kentucky, he later met and married Lissie Davis Alwin who was from Artemus in Knox County. To their union three children were born: Emily, Goldie, and Major Alwin.

Goldie's parents, inspired by a strong work ethic, opened Corbin Tire Repair Shop in 1930 and later Corbin Casket Company. Then in 1936, they opened Alwin Funeral Home.

Goldie was baptized as a young girl at the fish hatchery ponds at Woodbine. She was a member of the Center Street of God, then Parkway Church of God and East Side Tabernacle Church of God where she used her gifted musical talent of playing the piano for the Lord. As well, over the years she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and director of vacation Bible School.

Along with her sister Emily, she sang for funerals and homecomings and at church services. In addition to the piano, she played other musical instruments: the mandolin, guitar, and organ, bringing much joy to others.

Goldie and her husband Lonnie Hart, who were married on Jan. 9, 1946, at Center Street Church of God, opened Hart Funeral Home in 1949. Goldie became one of the first funeral directors in the Corbin area and earned the trust and confidence of mourning families.

A 1941 graduate of Corbin High School, Goldie can be remembered as an employee of Burrs Department Store that later became JCPenney.

Three sons were born to Goldie and Lonnie

Loving her roles as a wife, mother, and later, grandmother, Goldie became an avid cook and credited her husband Lonnie with helping to teach her the art of cooking. One of the favorite cakes she made was the "Granny Bee Taylor Apple Stack Cake." Needless to say, this cake was requested often and loved by everyone.

In later years, her silver hair elegantly styled with "nary a hair out of place" accented her stately appearance and identified her presence readily.

Goldie was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie Hart; her parents Mike and Lissie Alwin; her grandparents, William "Bill" and Millie Ann Sowders Davis; her brother Major Alwin; her sister Emily Alwin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Coy and Eva Hart, Bill and Ruby Hart Cobb, Luther and Christine Hart Gibbs, and Paul Hart; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, John W. and Mazie Mitchell Hart.
