NATIVE HIGHLANDER, CONFEDERATE VETERAN - DIES AT NEWPORT NEWS
Belated news of the death, May 1 of Caleb Campbell at the home of his daughter in Newport News, reachs us for this issue of The Highland Recorder. Born in 1840, near the head of Jackson's River. A son of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel B. Campbell, deceased made his home in Highland, until about about middle age sere. He saw service in the Confederate Army, Company I, 14th Virginia Calvary. In 1882 he was married to Miss Phebe Sullenberger, daughter of the late Samuel Sullenberger and has a sister and three half brothers now living in Monterey. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Maggie J. Burns of Ashville, N.C. and the following children: Mrs. T.J. Vernon and Guy Campbell of Newport News, T.J. Campbell of Lakeland, Fla. and S.S. Campbell of Miami, Fla. Mr. Campbell moved from Highland something like forty years ago but, his upright life, his worth as a man and citizen have not been lost sight of by those who remembered him. His wife died approximately eight years ago.
